Mitigating AI-Generated Disinformation and Deepfakes
UNCSTD
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has significantly transformed global information ecosystems, introducing new challenges related to AI-generated disinformation and deepfakes. These technologies have been increasingly used to manipulate public opinion, undermine democratic processes, and erode trust in institutions and media. As AI tools become more accessible, the potential for large-scale misinformation campaigns has grown, particularly in politically sensitive and conflict-affected regions.
UNCSTD discussions focus on balancing innovation with responsibility, addressing the ethical, legal, and technological implications of synthetic media. Member States must consider international standards for AI governance, digital literacy initiatives, and cooperation between governments, technology companies, and civil society. Delegates are encouraged to explore regulatory frameworks, detection technologies, and capacity-building measures that mitigate harm while preserving freedom of expression and technological development.
